What causes frizzy hair?
Frizzy, unruly hair has many causes, but generally the underlying issue is a lack of moisture. Many things can strip your hair of its moisture and natural oils including chemical treatments, heat styling, long hours spent in the sun, and harsh shampoos and cleansers. Naturally curly hair also tends to be more dry and frizzy than other hair types. Dry, porous hair that is desperate for moisture will try to absorb moisture any way that it can, which is why you will most often notice your hair becoming a frizzy nightmare on very humid and rainy days. Your hair will kink and curl in attempt to draw moisture from the air.
How do you achieve sleek smooth hair? Follow our easy tips!
TIP #1: MOISTURIZE
Harsh shampoos with strong lathering agents can strip the moisture from your hair, leaving it dry with lots of fly away strands. A hydrating shampoo and deep conditioner will contain ingredients that will coat and seal the hair cuticle to make it smooth and cut down on dryness. Give your hair the moisture it craves with a deep moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Try to leave the conditioner on your hair for at least five minutes when you shower so that it can be fully absorbed by your hair.
TIP #2: USE A SMOOTHING SERUM
A smoothing serum is a lightweight non-greasy product that will add oil to your hair for shine, fight frizz and fly away strands, and help to repair damage. When applied to wet hair, it can even speed up the drying time.
TIP #3: DRY GENTLY
Avoid scrubbing your hair roughly when you wash it or vigorously rubbing your hair with a towel when you dry it. These abrasive actions will cause the hair surface to become rough, making frizz an even greater problem. To dry your hair, use a soft T-shirt type material or super soft towel. Instead of wringing your hair, gently blot it instead.
Using a blow dryer too much, especially using a high heat setting, can be a source of dull, frizzy hair, static, and even split ends. Invest in a good quality hair dryer with an adjustable heat setting, and use the coolest setting possible. Ionic blow dryers are the best. You can also use a diffuser on the end of the dryer to avoid over heating your hair. For best results, however, try air drying your hair instead of using the dryer. Air drying will allow your hair to forego heat damage and dry frizz- free.
TIP #4: USE A HEAT PROTECTANT
Use a protective heat spray or serum before you use a blow dryer or any type of heat styling tool. This is important for all hair types, but especially for those with fine hair, which is more prone to the kind of cuticle damage that leads to frizz. You can apply the heat protectant to your hair while it is wet or still damp so that your hair can absorb it more easily.
TIP #5: DEEP CONDITION
Get a deep conditioning treatment at least once a month. If your hair is severely damaged, dry or frizzy, it can benefit from an intense deep conditioning treatment. This will help repair damage, seal the hair cuticle, add moisture and shine, and also increase the elasticity and manageability of your hair. Your hair will be visibly softer and smoother with vibrant shine.
