TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR HAIR COLOR....

Even the very best hair color will eventually fade, but with a little extra care your hair color can stay beautiful and luminous in the weeks following your color appointment.   How do you do it?  Follow the the top 7 tips from our hair color experts at Illusions hair salon in Colorado Springs.

TIP #1    LIMIT STYLING PRODUCTS

Finishing products like hair sprays, spritzes, mousses, and gels can contain high amounts of alcohol which can have a negative effect on your color.  For best results, use styling products sparingly.

TIP #2    AVOID CHLORINATED OR HARD WATER

Shampooing your hair in hard water or chlorinated water can cause your hair color to fade. Both of these types of water can affect your hair cuticle and attack your color.  If you swim, we recommend thoroughly saturating your hair in regular water or a good conditioner prior to swimming.  This will allow your hair to absorb the conditioning product instead of absorbing damaging chlorine molecules.   As soon as you finish your swim, immediately hit the shower for a thorough shampoo and deep conditioning treatment.

TIP #3    TRY A COOL WATER RINSE

Hot water can dry and damage the hair cuticle and it can also cause color molecules to escape from your hair.  Cool water on the other hand, helps close and seal the cuticle of your hair. Always shampoo and condition your color-treated hair in cool water. After conditioning the hair, do a final rinse in the cool water.  This will help to keep your hair cuticle closed and add amazing shine to your color.

TIP  #4     TAKE A BREAK FROM HEAT STYLING

Heat can be the worst enemy of color treated hair.   If your hair has been colored or has received highlights, try to limit the amount of time that it is exposed to a heat source.   Super high heat from flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers can cause your color to fade as well as lead to hair breakage and loss of moisture.  If possible, air dry your hair and always use a heat protectant before reaching for those styling tools!

TIP # 5  TRY A COLOR SAFE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER
Not all shampoos and conditioners are the same, and color treated hair needs the benefits of special shampoos and conditioners that will not only protect your color but also add extra hydration. Many color safe shampoos and conditioners, particularly those that are geared toward a certain shade of hair color, will contain special formulas and color enhancers to protect your hair color and slow down the color fading process.

In addition to a good, color safe shampoo and conditioner; use hair care daily products that contain sunscreens and light oils. Keep your hair thoroughly moisturized and protein conditioned! Regular conditioning goes a long way toward preserving hair color and keeping the hair radiant with little product!

When you visit Illusions hair salon in Colorado Springs, our stylists can recommend several shampoos and conditioners formulated just for color-treated hair.

TIP  #6    SHAMPOO EVERY OTHER DAY
This tip may not be an option for everyone, but if your hair type will allow it, wash your hair every other day instead of daily.  This will not only help preserve your hair color, it will also allow the natural oils in your hair to replenish, making your hair less dry and brittle.

TIP #7     SEEK SHADE AND SUN PROTECTION
Sunlight can fade just about anything, including your hair color.   In order to keep your color from fading, wear a hat or scarf if you plan to be in the sun for a long period of time.   You can also use a shampoo, conditioner or other hair care product that will protect your hair from damaging UV rays.
